My Favourite cafes, restaurants and places in Linné, Gothenburg, Sweden

We have been visiting Gothenburg, Sweden since 2018. On our recent trip back to Gothenburg we stayed in an area called Linné, bordering alongside the famous old town, Linné is filled with cafes, restaurants and beautiful 19 century architecture.
The Linné district is popular with the local Gothenburgers; with the main wide street Långgatan and is known as the city’s second-largest avenue.

I thought it would be fun to video and photograph some of my favourites spots from the best coffee in the area at Gerd, a great Italian cafe Bar Italia, a gluten-free Bakery A Healthy Choice, the best local Vegan Restaurant, a very good Thai restaurant, where to find the local supermarkets, a few favourite buildings, the local cinema Hagabion and how to get to and from Landvetter Airport with Flyband which app to download for public transport when visit.

Best Coffee In Linné, Gothenburg

We are serious espresso coffee drinkers. Being Australian and from Melbourne, we are fussy about good coffee and love our coffee strong. We love our daily ritual of drinking coffee in the morning. When we are away, we miss our favourite Rancilio coffee machine. Therefore we always search for the best local coffee. During our visit in November 2021, we were super excited to discover a funky independent cafe called Gerd (pronounced Jeeerd) just our style in Linnégatan Gothenburg that had a Melbourne vibe, like what you could find in the back streets of Fitzroy or Northcote.

Gerd (Pronounced Jeerddd)
As soon as you step inside Gerd it is a light filled space with superb high ceilings at Gerd you are greeted with a warm and friendly welcome from brothers Pelle and Kalle.

Pelle & Kalle

The brothers are passionate about the total customer experience from cool retro music that is lively but not overbearing (& so many of my favourite tunes), hand picked wild strawberries from the Swedish countryside near where they grew up. Their coffee is sourced from a Swedish coffee company called Gringo Nordic Coffee Roasters and is slow roasted, small batch 20% robusta bean.

Gerd do more than just coffee, you can choose other Frukost (breakfast in Swedish) items Juices, pastries, cakes, freshly made rolls, porridge or granola and yoghurt pots.

Breakfast Menu

Stick around long enough and once the morning Frukost (breakfast) rush is over, the cafe swaps over for their lunch menu. I am mostly eating vegetarian and vegan these days, however, I was tempted to indulge in the sandwich of the month after watching Mr P enjoy this mouth watering morsel in front of me. I was not disappointed, generous layers of spicy salami, fresh tomato, cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese and homemade style pesto. Oh my it was like a Rueben's sandwich went on a vacation to Italy then onto Sweden. See the image below.

After chatting with the brothers they were proud to let me know about their custom made curved timber counter with the classic and stylish Cararra marble top.

After a year of trading and weathering the Covid storm they have a constant flow of regulars. Gerd opens early for the before work coffee drinkers at 7 am until 5 pm during the week and 8 am on weekends.

It’s a family affair with their mother making some of their Swedish cakes and the flakey croissants and cardamom buns (like croissants) are locally made. and their uncle assisting with the boring bookwork, so they can focus on the fun stuff, serving the customers

Cardamom Buns made from croissant dough were amazing

If they're busy inside, there is lots of funky bench seating outside and don’t worry if you feel cold there are cosy blankets and cushions to keep you warm.

Other Places to Eat in Linné District

Vegan: Blackbird
Next time you're visiting Gothenburg, I would strongly suggest to book a table at Blackbird as they are super popular and you will need to book in  advance. Don't fret if you can't speak Swedish most places the staff can understand and speak a little english.

Inside Blackbird

For a delicious homemade vegan experience you must try Blackbird. This was marked in my maps to try for a few years. We finally visited and we were not disappointed. For starters we shared the delicious Chili cheese Four homemade fried cheese balls with hot jalapeño. For mains I tried the gluten-free tofu curry called no butter, no chicken which was beautifully presented and the tofu was semi crispy with a gently spiced curry sauce. Mr P devoured the Chimichanga burrito, also presented with creative touches. We couldn't leave without trying their desserts. (which I totally forgot to photograph). I couldn't pass up trying the flakey cinnamon apple pie (like a mini hand pie) with Blackbird's homemade vanilla soy ice cream was creamy and amazing and Mr P enjoyed the Vegall; Blackbird's own variant of Pigall (a Swedish chocolate bar), with creamy nougat, crispy rice puffs, roasted hazelnut and dark chocolate.

Hagabion Cinema in Linné

From their website:
Hagabion is an independent cinema located inside the great Viktoriahuset along Linnégatan, near Järntorget in Gothenburg city.

The cinema is part of the classical Folkets Bio Movement (”The People’s Cinema”). A network consisting of 20 cinemas in about the same size, spread all over the country, all of them working towards the same goal ever since the national organization of Folkets Bio was established back 1973: promoting non-commercial movies, alternative expressions and new perspectives in the art of cinema. Creating an opportunity for those voices who normally don’t reach out to a broader audience by offering a unique platform for filmmakers and distribution of their films.

Where are the local supermarkets in Linné?

When we stayed in Fjärde Långgatan, Linné, Gothenburg my favourite and closest supermarkets was the large Hemköp Masthuggstorget 3 A, 413 27 Göteborg, Sweden. There's also a smaller Hemköp on Linnégatan, Gothenburg, Sweden, but I found the range quite small.

Hemköp Gothenburg (pronounced as Hemshop)

Local COOP

There's also a coop that is close by, I find coop easy to navigate around coop. I like the way they merchandise and display their items and the fruit and vegetables are fresh.
