How to Make Oat Flour – Alternative Flour
If you can't buy flour in your town or city because of flour shortages due to COVID 19 and would still like to bake, here's my simple how to make oat flour at home.
Do you have rolled oats or porridge oats in your pantry? A Bamix blender, NutriBullet, coffee grinder or even food processor? Then you're in luck and can make flour at home by grinding oats.
Why is it so hard to buy flour?
It appears that baking has become one of the worlds favourite past times, I am calling 'baking the new yoga for 2020'. With so many working from home and self-isolating they are turning to baking because they have more time on their hands. I have been inundated with posts from friends on Instagram and Facebook with images of their latest baking triumph, 'my first sourdough bread from scratch', 'my first banana bread'. This, in turn has depleted the stocks of flour in the supermarkets, and the mills can't keep up with supply.
As a solution, I thought I would share more ideas on how to make flour at home, and other alternative flours to use instead of wheat flour.
Oat Flour Benefits
Whole oats are extremely nutritious, help reduce cholesterol levels in the body and are a great source of dietary fibre. Oats are higher in protein and healthy fats and lower in carbohydrates than most other whole grains. Oat flour has a silky smooth and light texture and can be used to bake with for pancakes, biscuits and cakes. It is a healthier alternative flour to bake with rather than wheat flour.
New Oat Flour Recipes
Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing recipes and videos for cakes, cookies and pancakes with oat flour. I have even used oat flour in my oat milk bechamel sauce recipe.
