Gothenburg Highlights

After many trips to Gothenburg, Sweden I thought I would share some of my favourite coffee and eating places.

Best Coffee in Gothenburg: updated January 2022.

Best Coffee In Linné, Gothenburg

We are serious espresso coffee drinkers. Being Australian and from Melbourne, we are fussy about good coffee and love our coffee strong. We love our daily ritual of drinking coffee in the morning. When we are away, we miss our favourite Rancilio coffee machine. Therefore we always search for the best local coffee. During our visit in November 2021, we were super excited to discover a funky independent cafe called Gerd (pronounced Jeeerd) just our style in Linnégatan Gothenburg that had a Melbourne vibe, like what you could find in the back streets of Fitzroy or Northcote.

My Favourite cafes, restaurants and places in Linné, Gothenburg, Sweden
We have been visiting Gothenburg, Sweden since 2018. On our recent trip back to Gothenburg we stayed in an area called Linné, bordering alongside the famous old town, Linné is filled with cafes, restaurants and beautiful 19 century architecture. The Linné district is popular with the local Gothenbur…

Bar Centro - Kyrkogatan 31, 411 08 Göteborg, Sweden

When we stay in the central area, this is our go-to coffee spot most mornings, as it was only a 15-minute walk from our apartment or hotels. Consistently great coffee, food and friendly service. The croissants are fresh and delicious, and my favourite panino was the salami & provolone, every bite reminded me of Italy. Every day we were treated like regulars; as the owner would greet us with a warm hej hej and have our coffee being made as we walked in the door.  That's amazing service.  The location is in the central shopping area of Gothenburg, so check this spot out for great coffee, good vibes, friendly staff and scrumptious bites.

Tony's Coffee Bar, Skånegatan, Göteborg, Sweden

One of my top places for strong Italian style coffee in Gothenburg. Tony (yes he is Italian) offers amazing service and delicious food.  Tony's is a cosy space inside but there’s good outdoor seating if you are a small group and perfect on a nice day. The toasted Geijersgatan are fresh and tasty. My husband enjoys the aragostine and the chocolate croissants. I prefer the plain croissants and the biscotti! Tony’s is well located down near Gothia Towers hotel, the bus stop for the airport if you need a sneaky coffee on the way. Close to the biggest ICA - Focus supermarket. Also nearby is Liseberg amusement park (at times you can hear the screams from the rides) and the museum Universarium. I would strongly recommend a visit to Tony’s next time you’re in Gothenburg.

Viktors - Geijersgatan 7, 411 34 Göteborg, Sweden

Viktors is another perfect coffee place for coffee in Gothenburg. Their coffee is slightly more 3rd wave than the other two but still a good coffee. They also sell filtered coffee and an extensive selection of tea, as well as an interesting assortment of soft drinks. The service and attentiveness when making coffee was impressive. I didn't try any of their cakes but they all look homemade and delicious. I would strongly recommend popping by next time you're visiting the library or Contemporary art museum or just wandering close by the Lorensburg area.

Best Healthy Lunch Spots in Gothenburg

Jos – Lilla Kyrkogatan, Gothenburg, Sweden

This cafe is full of healthy salads and the smoothie bowls are really good too. All served with great presentation and fresh colours – so your choice not only tastes good but looks good too.

Holy Green – Kyrkogatan 60, 411 08 Göteborg, Sweden

All their fast food is good, fresh and made from scratch every day. Their philosophy is to spread healthy joy with tasty, creative and colourful salads which are as appealing to the eye and the taste buds.

Best Dinner Spots in Gothenburg

Toso – Götaplatsen, 412 56 Göteborg, Sweden

Toso is a well-curated mix of Asian cuisines with pleasant staff that are happy to try and explain the menu in English. The size of the dishes are small "sharing meals" and designed to share with friends, they will bring out each dish as soon as it is cooked. The music at first is loud and overwhelming but once you're seated and start eating you get into the lively buzz of Toso. I would recommend booking before your trip as this place is very popular and they are booked out for weeks ahead. Leave room for dessert as these are a must-try.

The Market – Rosenlundsgatan 8, 411 20 Göteborg, Sweden

Korea bumps into Mexico with this cuisine, a truly unique dining experience.  We went with a group of six and ordered shared plates to try various dishes. My favourite was the taco's no need for starters as the serving are generous.

Tugg - Drottninggatan 21, 411 14 Göteborg, Sweden

Our go-to for the best burgers in Gothenburg. The flavour of the beef is so distinct and delicious, my husband and I are stumped to know what they do to the meat patty to give it the crunch and flavour. We have tried a few times to replicate the beef patties at home and haven't come close. Their fries and shakes are pretty good too. It is often packed so be patient it is well worth checking out. If anyone knows their secret please let me know.

I will update this article from time to time when I discover other great places in Gothenburg.

Happy travels.
